Watcher to Head Watcher @ 07:03 pm
Dominick knocked softly on Giles' office door.
"Come in!" Giles called as Hannah clicked away on a keyboard at a desk near the Watcher.
Dominick opened the door and stuck his head in. "Hullo, Giles. I heard you wanted to see me?"
"Hullo, Dominick," Giles said, motioning the Watcher inside. "Wanted to ask you if you could work up a report about the recent mission and I thought you might like to see the doctor's report."
Dominick smiled turned to Hannah. "Mind if I borrow that for a second?" When she nodded he tapped a few keys on the computer and soon that printer was humming. "There's your report. I typed it up early this morning. And yes, Giles, I really would like to see any information you can give me on Devka."
Hannah smacked at his hand playfully. "I hope you're better at computers than he is."
Giles nodded and handed Dominick two manila folders. "Psych and physical. Dom, both can be disturbing."
Dominick pretended to pout at Hannah for a moment. Then he went over to the printer and gathered up the papers to his report. "Here, now I don't have to email it. Tacha has been teaching me this computer business. It's helpful at the club." Dominick took the papers from Giles and sat down. "She seems to have her ups and downs," he said softly.
"Yes," Giles said. "That's what the doctors report. As we feared, she retreated into her mind when she was caged and collared. The psychologist thinks she'll react like... well... an abused dog. Totally submissive."
Dominick swallowed and looked up at the Head Watcher. "How do I help her?"
"Get her back into training but try and get her to see the difference between training as a trained dog and a Slayer," Giles suggested. "Not easy and I can't tell you how."
Dominick slowly nodded. "Having Ethan and Faith certainly help. I just...don't want to get in the way of her progress."
"They may also... coddle her," Giles said slowly. "You need to be her Watcher. Get her to start asserting herself, if you can. Not just obeying orders. Slayers have to think on their feet."
"Ah, so I have to play the bad guy now and then." Dominick gritted his teeth and nodded. "Well, I suppose I had practice at that in Russia."
"Not like a trainer, as a Watcher," Giles clarified. "Not as a bad guy. She needs you to be firm but not to fear you, Dom."
Dominick nodded. "I understand. Have you talked to the others that were there? I know things were difficult for Willow and Oz, and...I'm not sure how Helen is coping either." He felt it best to leave her be as much as possible, but that didn't mean he didn't care.
"Thomas mentioned that he's going to ask our visitor to give Helen some training while Thomas and your mother are off on holiday," Giles said. "He's the most experienced Watcher in the world."
"I've not talked to the others, I was letting them have the Valentine's day and settle back in."
"Seems like my mum goes on a lot of holidays these days," Dominick said with a little smile. "Are you and Claire going to the cabin for your anniversary?"
Giles nodded. "If you think you and everyone else can handle it. I don't believe Devka is dangerous as long as she doesn't go out into town yet."
Dominick frowned. "Well, if Thomas is going to be gone as well..." Dominick wasn't sure what Devka needed. "Giles, you should know that my wife is expecting. I'll want to be with her as much as possible."
Giles raised his eyebrows. "We're going to wait until Thomas and Alice return. You'll have Thomas, Xander, Hannah and Oz here. Also Gerald. Congratulations, by the by."
"Thank you," Dominick said with a smile. "Alright then. I'm sure we'll be fine. My mum and Thomas must be making a quick trip of it then. They didn't even mention it to me."
"To the Bahamas for some sunshine," Giles said with a nod. "About a week, including travel time." Giles suspected there was more to the trip but wasn't going to press his uncle.... yet. "So, Tacha is due... late October?"
"Halloween," Dominick said with a grin. "It was quite a Valentines day gift."
"No doubt," Giles said with a smile, shaking Dominick's hand. "Damned good news. Now, let's discuss the reports. Tell me, did Devka hug you?"
"At the end she did, yes." Dominick sat forward in his seat. "And she held her son, which I took as a very good sign."
"Very, very good," Giles said with a nod. "She wouldn't let me close. I didn't push but she normally is a.... demonstrative person. The psych says to watch the eyes, he noted changes several times while talking to her. Rapid changes from human to wolf."
"I noticed that too. Once. A lamp fell in the other room and it startled her," Dominick explained. "Her eyes turned yellow but she calmed down when Ethan gave her the baby to hold."
"Good sign that she calmed," Giles said with a sigh. "We suspect that she was... conditioned to be a trained dog, to change without thinking. That could be deadly here in the outside world."
"It's amazing how much damage can be done is such a short time," Dominick said grimly.
"Especially when something had been broken before," Giles said wearily. "It's much easier to break time and again. There comes a point when it can't be repaired. I don't think we're there with Devka, though."
"No, we're not," Dominick said firmly. "And it won't happen again." Not if he could help it anyway.
Giles nodded. "Now, take these and they'll give you some idea of what the psych got out of her. Not much but he has some insights. Just remember, firm but loving. She needs her real family here and she's accepting that from you, it appears."
Dominick nodded and stood up with the papers under his arm. "Thank you, Giles. I'll do my best to help her. I'll be back tomorrow to do some training with her."
Giles nodded. "Don't be surprised if she either resists or is too obedient."
"I won't. I'll call on you if I need any help," Dominick said as he headed for the door.
Giles sighed. There were so many details to cover on a daily basis. Not counting the appointment he now had to dash to. "Hannah, handle things please. I'm off to doctor."
"Come in!" Giles called as Hannah clicked away on a keyboard at a desk near the Watcher.
